The surrounded one of medieval boundaries volterrana was built in the century XIII. Initiated, to rise some century during the regime to console, as remaking and strengthening of the wall etrusca, was methodically continued up to 1254 year when the Florentines imposed with the weapons the government of part guelfa. In 1260 the regime ghibellino, happened to that guelfo, ascertained the vulnerability of the defensive system of the city, due to the too wide perimeter of the boundaries etrusche, engaged forty teachers of stone until the city it was not completely walled: begun in the autumn of 1260, the job was completed in the turn of few years. Today, besides the perimeter of the medieval boundaries, we can admire the doors, excellently preserved, that allowed the access inside the city.


And' that more ancient, inserted in the perimeter of the boundaries etrusche (V sec. to.C.), it owes without doubt the perfect maintenance to his/her use in the surrounded medieval town of the XIII sec. The construction of this door seems must be reported to three different epoches. The sides, formed by enormous rectangular blocks as the boundaries, and to these contemporaries (to the sec. IV-III TO.C.), the arcs, in tufo, tall 6 meters, seem a reconstruction happened after the siege of Silla (80-82 to.C.), uncertain the meaning of the three heads set to decoration of the outside so much that different hypotheses are formulated: you/they could evoke sacrifices of grapevine human in the maintenance of new constructions or a memory of the custom to post to the doors the heads cut of the defeated enemies, or you/they could represent Jupiter and the Dioscuris, or still, the Triad Capitolina Jupiter Giunone and Minerva; while above the masonry is a remaking medioevale.

Agnolo for the near church devoted to the archangel, offers the same architectural structure of the other doors volterrane, even if they are visible rehashes performed in the XVI sec., when the door, during the 1530 siege, it was stricken in the impending tower, where a deposit of ammunition was contained. From this door him diparte the street for Florence, through the valley of the river it was, passing for The Chestnut tree, Gambassi Terme, Castelfiorentino and Montespertoli or, following the manager of the Arno, for Empoli and Plate to Signa.


Built in the XIII sec., it put in communication the city with the surrounding valley, rich of water and luxuriant of vegetation. The door preserves the characteristic structures of the doors volterrane of that century, with an inside and external arc to all sixth and containing an ogival arc within which a reduced arc develops him or stupid. Inside the boundaries, immediately in front of the door, we find the Source of Docciola. Built in 1254 by teacher Stefano, as he/she remembers the headstone inserted among the two great ogival arcs that form the portico on the type of the sources in Siena. Today, solitary and stately, to fund of a long stairway, together with the homonym door form one of the architectural complexes more relatives and suggestive of the cities. Built, perhaps, in the XIV sec., it put in communication with the monastery olivetano of S. Andrew (today Seminar), and it used comfort access to the agriculturists of the surrounding country.


The actual door, to simple arc to all sixth, you/he/she was built in the XVI sec. in substitution of the most ancient, said also of the Sun, remained buried for the amplifications of the Old Fortress in the XV century. From door to Flints the direct roads were issued toward the territory Senese.


Out of the surrounded one of the boundaries medioevali, in direction of the Val of it was, it is found what he/she remains of this door etrusca. Carelessness has not succeeded in saving the arc etrusco, today the sides remain only.
