Volterra

The Museum Etrusco "Guarnacci" of Volterra

  • The Museum Guarnacci

  • Museo
In the Street Don Minzioni is found the Museum Guarnacci, one of the more ancient public Museums of Europe and one of the most interesting picked etrusche of Italy. Begun in 1732, the collection went constituting himself/herself/itself in the actual patrimony for work of the archaeologist Mons. Mario Guarnacci (Volterra 1701 - 1785), erudite historian that in 1761 it gave her/it "to the people volterrano." The donation also included a rich library of over 50.000 volumes that became an indivisible patrimony and important cultural tool. The museum, articulated in around 40 environments, on three floors, it constitutes the historical memory of the "ancient city."
The first rooms they understand a prehistoric section, with finds of the civilization Villanoviana and with the reconstruction of burials of the first age of the iron (IX - VIII sec. to.C.). To the archaic period (You sec. to.C.) one belong some more monuments known of the museum: the stele of Avile Tite, gravestone that represents a warrior armed with lance and sword.
The part most important, however, you/he/she is constituted by a vast section etrusca formed by hundreds of urns cinerarie in alabaster, tufo and terracotta, a lot of of which adorn of beautiful bas-reliefs with representations of the Greek mythology, some scenes they are directly drawn by the odyssey, or with scenes of the trip of the dead ones, that make us go up again to the tastes and the culture of the buyer; in the urn cineraria typical of Volterras were mails the ashes of the dead one after the rite of the cremation, almost exclusive to Volterra. The urn has the aspect of a small separate sarcophagus in two parts: the box, that is the container of the ashes and the cover, that in a first time (IV sec. to.C.) it is simple, subsequently adorned with the figure of the dead semisdraiato on the occasion of the funeral banquet, social moment in which you/they participated, with great scandal of the Greek and the Romans, also the women etrusche. The Etruschis are perhaps the first people that has effected the parity between man and woman. Famous "the bridegrooms' urn" (The sec. to.C.), it foresees in all the texts of art and in all the books of history.
Important the collection of figurines, the more note is the famous one "Shade of the evening", bronzetto votivo etrusco of the III sec. to.C. what the shade evokes projected on the ground by the human figure to the light of the sunset, whose reproduction is found in all the shops volterrani, the harvest of pots handed perfume in glass and gold and of the known ones "buccheri", the beautiful black vases whose I mix you/he/she has been unknown up to our days.
The museum also has other sections that understand thousand of coins, works of oreficeria and beautiful mosaics. Sees the variety of the finds and, particularly, the complexity of the scenes represented on the urns, is preferable to make to be accompanied by a guide that you can book on the place to enjoy to the best the visit.
