City guelfa, changed name three times, the last in 1636 from pope Urbano VIII
URBANIA (Pesaro and Urbino) - Urbania is a town of ancient fidelity to the Church, marked, almost from the origins as colony in the Rome of the Popes. And' one "marka" for excellence with his/her territory of so next border to Tuscany, Umbria and Romagna.
Placed in the tall valley of the Metauro, one among the most beautiful of the seven principal valleys that compose the Brands, Urbania exemplarily represents the regional characters. Already from the first centuries of the diffusion of the Christian verb its territory is a network of abbeys, hermitages, monasteries and parishes (You - VII sec.).
For his/her tenacities devotion to the party guelfo was found twice in conflict with the neighbor and more powerful city of Urbino, for which Castel of the Ripe (1° name of the actual Urbania) destroyed consecutive in the XIII century. You/he/she was reconstructed (1280 - 1282) therefore for wanting of Pope Martino IV, on the shores of the Metauro to work of Guglielmo Durante (from which the name of Casteldurante) Listener of the Romagnes and then bishop of Defects.
The new castle was endowed with autonomies and privileges, and it assumed the role of small capital of the Mass Trabaria (1367). A segment that characterizes the history durantina is the secular struggle of emancipation from the city of Urbino: this long run has beginning from the separation from the Committee of Urbino (XIII sec.), it continues with the "Nullius" of the abbey of St. Cristoforo of the Bridge and the erection in County (XV sec.); it concludes him with the elevation of the abbey to Diocese and of the castle in the city in 1636 (Urbania from Pope Urbano VIII).
As the Brands since the antiquity have received many names (Piceno Annonario, Umbria senonica, Region of the Pentapolis...), this way Urbania has suffered a real metamorphosis onomastica, having changed name from the Roman age well 4 times: perhaps Urbinum Metaurense Roman town hall, then Castel of the Ripe up to the XIII century; Casteldurante from 1284, reconstructed from the in operation church antighibellina; finally Urbania in 1636.
From the XVI century Urbania is famous for his/her ceramics.
